COTTAGE – Asheville, NC
Located in the Montford Historic District, the main (yellow) house was designed by Richard Sharpe Smith, a prominent Asheville architect. Our task was to design a mother-in-law cottage on the rear portion of the long, narrow lot accessed from a mid-block alley. In making the cottage compatible with the main house, we used the same dropped gable roof shape, pebbledash stucco, window configuration, porch railing and column brackets. The project was approved by the Historic Resources Commission and received a Griffin Award from the Preservation Society for appropriate infill in a historic neighborhood.
